21st CCLC After School Program

In July of 2019, the Douglas County School System, in partnership with Communities in Schools of Douglas County, started their first year of a five year 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant program. This is our third grant. The program is known as FOCUS. The FOCUS program is designed to provide students with hands-on activities aligned with the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) such as the following: reading and math tutoring and enrichment, science experiments, entrepreneurial education, cultural arts education, mentoring program, homework help, tutoring, recreation, technology integration, character education, drug prevention education, and violence prevention education. Educational experiences provided through the FOCUS program are specifically designed to instill in the student a lifelong love of learning. Students also participated in transition activities focusing on helping students transition from middle to high school.

Our goals within the FOCUS program are as follows:

  • Increase achievement in all academic areas
  • Demonstrate enhanced reading ability and motivation
  • Homework Completion
  • Increase confidence and self esteem of students
  • Decrease grade retention
  • Decrease disciplinary issues
  • Decrease grade retention
  • Increase family involvement
  • Increase community engagement
  • Utilize scientifically based best practices with teachers and students
